... albums that are lost, obscured or underrated...
Hole - Celebrity Skin is underrated... I keep coming back to it PJ Harvey & John Parish - Dance Hall at Louse Point. Everyone goes on about Dry & Rid of Me, but this is one of peej's very finest... Red House Painters - how come more people don't like them? Amazing band. Idaho, too, in the same quiet, introspective, lo-fi mould...
.. what are yours?

Yeah, Celebrity Skin is great. Mine would include
Shellac - At Action Park Icarus Line - Mono
That's all I can think of at the moment.

I don't think these really count, but you'd be amazed how many people haven't heard records like 'His n Hers' by Pulp and 'If You're Feeling Sinister' By Belle & Sebastian. Both arguably the best by those bands, but from before they hit mainstream success, and so not as popular. It's a world gone MAD

I haven't heard either of those. Somebody got me something by B&S for my birthday many years ago, but I still haven't listened to it.
Also Sonic Nurse - I must confess, there was probably an element of snobbery for me - they didn't make it 15 years ago, so it must be shite. I was pleasantly surprised when I listened to it today - it's probably their best since Dirty (with the possible exception of Washing Machine).

I think Sonic Nurse is possibly their best record. Daydream Nation and Dirty are obviously brilliant, but Nurse & Murray Street are really special, and probably my favourites, maybe because when they played at ATP the stuff they played was mostly from those records and it was magical. But, no actually, I put those two on more than any of the others. In fact I've probably listened to Nurse & M.Street more than all of the others combined.

I've never really understood Sonic Youth, or the fascination people have. Why do I not get it? Am I wrong?

I concur I also do not get sonic youth....its just a load of random note innit....
I would advise everbody to try to listen to 'Metamatic' by John Foxx.....especially if they like electronic noises

I didn't get Sonic Youth for aaages I have to admit. The jagged chords seemed really un-musical compared to the more tuneful/ power-chordy bands of the time like Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana. Maybe a bit of an interest in dissonance and noise and the avant garde made me come back to them and see that they actually play with structures and sounds in a really creative way, almost anti-music at times. I'd say they are one of the more 'difficult' bands out there. Maybe that's why they maintain this constant cult status without ever really breaking into the pop culture mainstream. Quite an acheivement really - being a rock star with integrity.

Daydream Nation is probably my favorite album ever, by anybody? Couldn't say why, you might as well ask what sound green makes.
It's the first SY album I ever got, and when I did get it, I hated it - it just didn't make any sense, it sounded like so much self satisfied art-wankery. Dunno what changed my mind, but it might not be the best introduction. For something slightly more straightforward, try Dirty.

I've listened to Washing Machine, and a little bit of Daydream Nation (that was ages ago though, so time may be a healer and all that). I own 'Bull In The Heather' on single, I thought that was ace. But that actually had a tune...

I reckon bamos should invest in 'Dirty'. That's supposed to be their most accessible isn't it? It was the first one I bought I think. It has 100% and Youth Against Facism anyway...
