I did art which I guess is just above media studies at the bottom of the degree-snob pile. I sometimes wish I had done English, but you can't really have regrets like that, I always think just because you've done a degree in one subject doesn't mean you can't take an active interest and school yourself in another. I don't like the degree snobbery, obviously - I think disciplines like art and philosophy do teach you important things, like how to think. I'm quite sure a lot of business studies people and law people get their precious degree but then ultimately end up miserable having never really explored what they are capable of. Although I guess that could be applied to people in any field.

my first post ever on the brainlove forum! woop etc i really hope this doesnt become as clogged up with wankers as DiS has. luckily, i have mostly escaped from them, but they irritate me so much i cant help relpying to them... on an academic note - i am going to become an art student bum, if i wasnt so damn young i'd have left last year, and med students are foolish. doing medicine means you'll actually have to work at uni you realise?? and that translator thing is DA BST AVAR LEIK WOAH

Welcome, miss vacant... you're doin art too huh? To be fair, it's probably less challenging than a lot of courses in terms of workload, but art courses are as challenging as you make them for yourself, and as people get to the really big questions it's as complex and important as anything else. In fact maybe even more so.
What kind of art are you gonna make? Who do you like?
(PS. No to html... BUT you can go back into your posts and edit them if you do constant typos and mistakes like me.)

I havent heard much sneering at Art. Media Studies gets it bad. all us Journalism students used to look down on the Media Studies students. I'm doing an MA Writing now and that's about as prestigious as postgraduate courses come

I'd just like to point out that medical students are a bunch of arrogant, cliquey charlatans. Their sole subject of conversation with any non-medic is how much work they've got and how philanthropic they are. The only thing that makes medicine difficult is the volume of things to remember and the length of the course. There's nothing conceptually difficult in there. Sorry, rant over.

I think what you said about law / business studies is spot on Brainlove. People don't like thinking for themselves - it's like you're not allowed to have your own opinion. Arts subjects are great because you actually come to understand things, to understand people. As far as most of my course-mates are concerned, their sole purpose is to get the degree with as little fuss as possible, sell their souls to a big city firm and sleep on a pile of money for the rest of their lives. Interesting you say about writing MA Jared... I'm thinking of doing that. That or journalism, interestingly enough. Great minds think alike and so forth (And yeah... media studies is considered the lowest of the low...)

Speaking as a *whispers it* journalist I have to admit the general opinion of medja studies is fairly low. Whenever I get pressed into giving advice about what to study I always say do whatever you are interested in. You will then be interested, get a good degree and have an area of knowledge to offer employers you write for. You can get professional training easily enough after your degree, either through the NCTJ or on a postgraduate course (which is what I did).
Jared - where is your MA in writing? I always thought that would be the hottest of shit hot courses ever, you lucky (talented) bastard.

Jared - where is your MA in writing? I always thought that would be the hottest of shit hot courses ever, you lucky (talented) bastard. It's at Sheffield Hallam and is rated as the joint best course of it's kind in the country, along with Andrew 'Poet Lauriete but incredibly shit' Motion's course at East Anglia

Dude, that's the most!
I like Benjamin Zephaniah's take on poet laureates in "Bought and Sold":
Don't take my word, go check the verse Cause every laureate gets worse A family that you cannot fault as muse will mess your mind, And yeah, you may fatten your purse And surely they will check you first when subjects need to be amused With paid for prose and rhymes.
Take your prize, now write more, Faster, Fuck the truth Now you're an actor do not fault your benefactor Write, publish and review, You look like a dreadlocks Rasta, You look like a ghetto blaster, But you can't diss your paymaster And bite the hand that feeds you.
Nice.

But isn't it tradition that the poet laureate gets LOADS of barrells of rum per year?

why is Media Studies so "frowned upon"? Surely it must be some help if you want to get a job in media?
