In general I like old man type pubs, which should consist of lots of wood, ancient memorabilia, photo's of famous people long gone, real ales, stuffed animals and resident old men supporting the bar. Ohh nearly forgot, it must offer bar snacks most importantly pickled eggs served in cake cups with black pepper.
Tonight I went to the best pub we've found in Dalston yet... It offered most of the above, sadly no pickled eggs that I could see.... but it had extras - taken from New Orleans - a jazz band who played till 3 in the morning!!! Amazing. I was a very happy lady and that's my new favourite pub.
What's your favourite pub like?

Lots of my friends (mostly ex friends these days) love all that old man stuff. It has it's place sure. Personally though I like a bar that can make a proper fuckin drink. If I order a bloody Mary I want salt and pepper and a stick o' celery. If I order Pimms & lemonade, I want cucumber and mint leaves. I want a proper drink. If I ask for wine I want a list of choices not a bottle of blossom hill "table wine". There is a pub near here called the halfway house, it's owned by the guy who owns the medicine bar in brum (supercool bar/ grill/ gig venue) - I like that place. They have real wine lists, amazing food and a brilliant bar with spirits from around the world instead of just Bells and Smirnoff. Poncey bars, as Bamos would probably have it. White walls and art instead of lung-tar brown and pictures of ancient football teams. Yup.

Yeah - you should be able to get good wine, that's definitely part of the requirements. but you can get that in proper pubby pubs. I REALLY intensely dislike ponsey city boy type bars which are becoming increasingly popular around Londres. Chains chains chains, it happens in every format of retail and it's sooo depressing. Mind you I work for Woolies so I should shutit really. But your drinking hole is more important than where you buy your clothes or general housewares....

I totaly depends on the mood of the ocasion. if we're going out for a quiet 8 pints, then an old man pub is great. The Rummer Tavern was an old favourite before the clientelle got a little off If we're going on the wank all night, it's good to start somewhere cheap and cheerful and full of people like a Witherspoons. SO CHEAP!! Or a new favourite of mine, the pretentious jazz bar. stupidly expensive, rediculous decor and rubbish music. You just sit back with your stupidly expensive drink and look at all the people pretending to be pretentious. pretending to know what the hell their doing there. eavesdrop on a couple of conversations, chuckle to yourself. have crazy conversations with crazy local characters such as Ninja Pendragon!!! That hurt my head last time! Ah the Toucan club, fan-fucking-tastic.

On the wank! I'm glad that one's stuck. You missed some classic missChief last night dave/doug, although I guess I'll actually tell you face to face when you get home.
I likes the 'old man' Pub as well. The Rummer is great if a little expensive, and Lucy's always there. Grr. Lucy's a total knocker.
Dempseys' is a good pub in Cardiff as well, open till 1am which is practically unheard of for Cardiff pubs. They've got some random nonsense littered around the place as well, even a pram for some reason! Lucy's always there as well, so we go to...
The Goat Major, proper traditional pub, complete with a carbon monoxide leaky fire!
The Toucan is quite funny yes, Ninja's a bit of a knocker tho, the othernight he asked me who was playing, so I pointed out the poster, and he went "MC Saizmundo?" i said "yes", and then he went "Minnesota!", and i said "Umm Yes!" and then he walked away.
In Cardiff there's some good bars if you go out of the city center. Chapter Arts Center has a great selection of stuff.
Anyway, no-one cares.

My preference is/was the old man pubs so I could get a proper pint of Guinness.
If any of you are in Glasgow and record shopping, check out The Quarter Gill next to Missing Records. That was my citycentre bar of choice if I wanted to down 10 pints and a double whisky. About £1.60 for a good pint of Guinness. If you want a chat you'll get one, if you want to be left alone to drink you will be. Pictures of boxers around the walls. Shoplifters coming in and trying to sell you stuff. Have never seen any trouble in it. The Halt Bar is also good, Old Peculiar on draught. The Sarry Heid (The Saracen Head) across from Glasgow Barrowlands is brilliant. Shammy cider on draught and the choice of either white or red tornado from the barrel, rotgut wine which I think is leftovers from the Buckfast/Eldorado/Four Crown/Lanliq quality wines sold at the bar. A real trampshop which I must be the only person in existence to have sold croissants in.
I have no truck with wankshops were people go to be seen.

I think I prefer the old man pub option. I had a most enjoyable evening proping up the bar at SCL's establishment the other night. Relaxed atmopshere, good duke box, and interesting chance encounters. I met three of the most entertaning people (fellow bar propers) I've met in a long time. Yourselves excluded, of course. We talked Derek and Clive, speaking Mandarin, botanical print-making, and a load of other bollocks. Although, they probably did more of the talking, while I got slowly giddy on free wine. I did used to go to The Medicine Bar quite alot when I lived in Brum too. If its the one I'm thinking of. It's in the Custard Factory right? Think I saw Luke Vibert and JJ Cale playing his special slidy hawian sounding type instrument there once. Typo alert!!!

Yeah, the one in the Custard Factory. I like it there, although since I have been going out less lately I am starting to see what people mean about feeling intimidated by the hipsters. You gotta be looking great and feeling 'absolutely fabulous' to go there...
Maybe.
