Getcha hands offa mah woman motherfu-uh-uhuhhhhhhh-KAAAAA
Everyone seems to think my taste revolves around what's cool. Not true. I like what I like what I like. And I definitely like the real life Spinal Tap with fireworks, flares, riffs, falsetto squealing, lighters in the air power ballads and squiggly 2 minute harmonic solos, a CHRISTMAS SINGLE, all dusted with bricks made of sarcasm... FUCK YEAH!

it was funny when i thought it was sarcastic and ironic...
then i realised it's not when they put out the song where they're on the cliff in the video.
plus even as a joke it's old VERY quick.
there's a reason why it's naff, remember.

I worked on the video for that Christmas single. It was very funny. I had to take someone to hospital because they cut their head open on a plastic crocodile.

I own the Darkness album.
I own the Christmas single.
I also own a Darkness mug and thong (don't ask) from when I went to see them at Brixton Academy.
For sing-a-long comedy, who-gives-a-shit-what-people-think, utter nonsense, The Darkness are ace.
However, the Reading headline set last year was possibly the worst live thing I've ever seen. I went and watched K*s*b**n it was that bad.

I was off my face for the Darkness' Reading set and spent most of the time staring slack-jawed at the pretty fireworks.

I'm not physically capable of comprehending how people can genuinely like The Darkness.
They're just the epitome of shit.

Seems like everyone is taking the Darkness quite seriously. I don't really think of them as a proper band in the usual sense. They are just a kinda fun novelty to me. Like when the Bootleg Beatles played at Glastonbury, or Har Mar Superstar.

I do believe that was a slight piss-take as well though. That was the big 'rock-ballad', which calls for a big nonsense helicopter video, whatever language you're speaking. And they speak the language of rock. Owwwww.

I think to some extent all of our tastes revolve around what's cool, or at least overlap with it (depending who's deciding what's cool), but everyone has their "guilty pleasures", whatever that means. I think we're largely past "....is just shit" pronouncements here.
Speaking personally, its not that I'm trying to take them seriously, I simply can't bear the sound the Darkness emit, whether or not its ironic. The 80s hair metal bands were bad enough in the first place - I really hoped I'd never have to hear them again, unless it was on a Channel 4 nostalgia programme. Weren't Spinal Tap the real Spinal Tap? I guess its comedy metal for people who don't like metal. I have no problem with people enjoying them, though I do object to the way they seem to be aggressively marketed at us from all angles, as if they actually should be taken seriously. I mean headlining Reading ffs!
