But unlike the pope you don't get loads of people praising you for it, he gets paid (in kind) it is his job, we do it voluntarily, is my point. Yeah, this is my problem. All the chances he had to inject his own personal style into the papacy it seemed to be to issue negative, conservative pronouncements.

Well today is the funeral, so i thought I'd over up some more Pope Bashing. Creakyknees should love This one as it also has a dig at Ma Theresa in there. And Johann Hari [/link] has some more digs as well. Should this be in the politics section? it's sort of political isn't it?

I was thinking more current affairs... every time I see the thread title on the boards I want to laugh at how brazenly cocky it is and how pissed off I was when I wrote it.

There's white smoke coming out of that chimney, it looks like a new pope has been chosen, apparently on the 4th vote.
Proberbly another conservative one.

Copied from bbc.co.uk
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger has been elected as the pope - the head of the world's 1.1 billion Roman Catholics. Taking the name Pope Benedict XVI, the 78-year-old German has appeared on the balcony of the Vatican palace.
78! way to keep in touch with today's youth. He can't be around for too long at that age as well.

If I remember rightly he's pretty much from the John Paul the second camp so there won't be too much change in the Catholic church's direction.

sounds like they've just picked one that won't last one so they can have a breather/party, then they can settle down and take their time over the real next one.
By the way all that white smoke, is it from some giant ecclisiastic doobie?

that's the ceremonial burning of the previous pope's leftover cocaine stash.
rumour has it the vote is based on a 'talent contest' where the eventual pope proves his worth by doing 5 lines for every hooker.
Benedict is HARDCORE!

"Fuck the pope, he was wrong about everything"
Pretty much sums up what we'll be saying when this one snuffs it.

As I blapped down at DiS:
"Did anyone really expect anything different? Whenever an organisation or group is under act, they retreat to what they know, they return to the foundation. Electing Ratzinger is not that much different from the US government going more conservative after the 9/11 attack. Catholicism has been battered over the last few years primarily through the child abuse scandals and I'm sure there is a certain amount of worry over the effect homosexuality might have on Catholicism, as it has had an effect on other religions. Electing a white guy who is almost certainly not going to be preaching contraceptive use and more rights for women is no surprise whatsoever given the circumstances."
My wife really thought the African gent would get elected and we had a quality debate over it. What are the chances of an organisation that is against gays, against pre-marital sex, prefer keeping women shackled and whom make all manner of conservative judgements and pronouncements might not be too keen on the darker skinned of us? Voting a black pope would be like George Bush demanding Julian Clary as his new Secretary of Homeland Defence. 'Evolution of thought' isn't a phrase that's been muttered in the Vatican right now...

Let's pray that the new Pope does as good a job as the last one at covering those pesky child abuse scandals.
