Am watching The Chronicles of Riddick... It's totally rubbish sci-fi. I love it. Like Farscape!

It's crap compared to Pitch Black though, that film has to be one of my favourite action films cause of the clever use of colour filters throughout.
Don't get me started on all those shitty sci-fi programs like farscape... ;D

I like Farscape a lot. I know it's basically bad though. That's the thing. I'm not quite sure how that works though. I'll have a think about it. Ana would have an answer I reckon. I didn't like Riddick because of the action really, although that was pretty cool. It was the stupidly grandiose and fantastical image of the future, all those vast landscapes and bright colours. Hm.

I suppose it's disposable TV which can be enjoyable sometimes, like Nip+Tuck ;D
I like the world that was created in Riddick, hopefully this will be added on in the next one.
Only problem, you're halfway round the galaxy and who's there?
Bloody Dame Judi Dench who plays every English woman over 55.

She's gone all Sir Anthony Hopkins on us. Bloody sellouts.

She was in about three scenes and had quite obviously phoned them in on the same day. That's the thing with actual good actors. If they are doing a part in film they aren't dedicated to, you can see it all over their face. You know. They don't even have to stretch their legs. So it comes across as lazy, even if the film is quite good. Whereas, Vin Diesel, I mean the guy can't fuckin act at all, so he was stretched to the limits of his acting capacity. Which is better than a noncommital performance from some luvvy who's filling their savings account for a day's work.

I call them 'boat' roles. In that the actor took the role to finance their new boat. Although I think a lot of actors take crap roles in high-profile films so that economically they can then afford to do a smaller more interesting film. Steve Buscemi is a classic at this, what the funk was he doing in Armageddon?

Con Air was worse. And Cusack? *shakes head sadly*

The worst "boat" roles are the famous actors doing voices for animations.
Just stand there, script in hand and read away.
Reminds me of the Simpsons where Krusty runs into the studio, says his dolls messages in 5 seconds then runs out.

Hmmm. I think doing a good job on voice-overs can be hard. You somehow have to put across emotion into an animation, stuck in a little booth on yor own with a script and a mic. I think that sounds quite tough. It's like when actors say radio is sometimes harder to do than TV or film.

my favourite voice over story is about how harrison ford did the worst possible job he could on the voice over for the studio release of blade runner, but they used it anyway.
The thing with voice overs in Noir films is that they are usually voiced by a dead or soon to be dead character... maybe that means that the careers of cartoon voice over artists have "jumped the shark".
It actually worked ok in blade runner i think because it was another indicator that dekkard was a replicant, ie due to be dead real soon.
by the way the book "do androids dream of electric sheep?".... way better than blade runner. much darker.

"Chronicles..." is so, so bad. And not in a "so bad it's hilarious" way like "xXx" was. It's just bad.
"Pitch Black" was okay though.
And "Blade Runner" was quality.

I liked it! I really did! I love overblown sci-fi though. Anything with huge sets and "bleak futuristic visions" and big bulky costumes and special powers and an evil empire, and I'm there.
