What does everybody think about this? news.ipodworld.co.uk/index.php/weblog/uk_downloaders_may_start_paying_ipod_tax/ "The illegal digital download market is in danger of crippling the British music industry,” said Doug D’Arcy, former head of Chrysalis and BMG." Lies, lies, lies. All it has done is given record labels the shock they deserved for overcharging people for music. They have to deal with it and think of some kind of reasonable solution rather than continuing to blame the people that they seem to forget still give them money. Are sales dropping? No. I don't buy fewer CDs because of downloading, I'm just able to get access to music I like more.

i've actually been buying CDs from america for a while now as i can get each LP for about £5, which cancels out the postage if you buy more than 2.

"We had an opportunity to introduce a levy on audio cassettes back in the 1970s and passed it up. That decision cost the business tens of millions, and to make the same mistake again could be fatal.”<br> And yet the music industry managed to survive, its not like home tapping killed music. Indeed look at the mixtape exchange on dis, i would argue that is introducing people and encouraging them to go out and buy more records (or at least it will when i've eventually done kleeb/drumonds mix).
Also interesting to see emi refuse to back it, i know that sony wont because of hardware sales. But can anyone explain emi's oppostion?
Finally, i'd have said that if anything i probably buy more music because of downloading, not less, as it enables me to preview stuff. In the end i still want to own the physical cd, far harder to lose whereas mp3's can be lost if you're hard disk fucks up.

I can only speak personally and I don't own an ipod, but the opportunity to download music has only broadened my horizons, I'm buying more not less. I was chatting to someone who works for a dancey dancey record label tonight who's name I've failed to remember and he was all for it, as is their label. If they don't embrace it and learn to work with it then they're DOOOMED I tell theeee mwahahaha

Yeah it's true, every time you download a song by anyone on a major label, Osama Bin Laden gets a shower of UK coinage through the roof of his cave.
