Meh... I stopped writing anywhere online for a while because I was tired of nothing arguments, the sort of vacuous shouting that pissed me off at university. Then this thread appears and the thread creator just has me lost: www.drownedinsound.com/boards/thread/214012I don't want to be right or correct, I have no desire for anyone to agree with me in any way so that doesn't worry me. Just look at it and answer this question: has he any concept of structuring a decent argument or am I just tired and stupid right now?

That 'bigmanwithagun' is a total knocker, his arguments don't make any sense and he doesn't seem to have any grasp of how thing work in the real world.
"yes, I would completely include every single person who worked on the advert. The film crew, the actors, little Johnny who made the fucking coffee. Every single one."
-what a total bell-end, as if half the people he mentioned would even know what song'd be used. I doubt even the director knew!
The whole music in ads thing is a tricky one isn't it? It can decontextualise (or recontextualise) the song, which I think is what annoyes fans -someone using their song to try and sell them a car or whatnot. But then is their really such a thing as context for a song anyway? Meaning isn't a fixed, tangible thing. It could be your fave song, could be what soundtracked Ryan and Seth doing something on The OC, could be what told you to go on holiday.
Dunno really, I don't really like it myself. My gripe's with advertisement itself I guess, in my eyes they seem to take concepts from art/music/whatever, and suck out anything that was originally interesting about it, replacing it with a boring message of consumerism. On the other hand, i first heard the Pixies in an ad (Tame in a vodka add), and they're now my favourite band. How different is that to someone who heard Where Is My Mind in Fight Club and got into them that way?
Ah sorry I'm rambling. Why aren't I in bed?
Oh and welcome DrFurry -how is Canada?

Oh, and well done, this made me laugh: "And how were you introduced to music? Some fucking wandering gypsy playing orchestral folk songs only to you? Did you refuse all attempts by people to make you listen to the radio, instead choosing only to listen to tunes played on the free jukebox of the local underground communist speakeasy? Pass me a beret, for I feel a Jazz Club scene coming on..."

It's very nice right now, Toronto is harsh when the snow is in but the sun has been beaming, it's been really warm, today my wife turned 23 so cheesecakes and a BBQ were the order of the day. I'm actually coming back to Blighty on Friday, I have to find myself a new job and get somewhere to live in readiness for Laura's year-long study at Bristol University... oh the fun of being married to a student of philosophy. It's going to suck being apart for much of the summer but it'll pass quickly enough.
There, enough social joy for now. I'd better not say too much or biggunmanthing will say that it's all a charade covering up my bleak spirit...

Hey Doc, I know what you mean about getting tired of nothing arguements. I allow my self to get sucked into them sometimes nonetheless.
I only read a couple of his posts, seems like he's pretty clueless though.
