OK Music geeks who ae your fave producers are there any that you think have really brought the best out in bands over the last 15-20 years and who you respect as an artist?

Godrich obviously...apart from Radiohead he did a stunning job on Beck's album Sea Change...think he rescued that from being a totally average album.
Also Ken Nelson did a great job with Coldplay...I don't care if you don't like the band that sound has been ripped off to buggery.
Neptunes. Too ubiquitous now I know, but they brought something new to the table and have made some great Pop tracks. They also have been ripped off immensely.
Someone will say Steve Albini, but I ain't so sure.

DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Q Tip, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, The Alchemist, Havoc, Marley Marl...
of course, this means nothing to non-rap fans.
Dr Dre has to be the most over-rated producer ever. He's done nothing of note for 11 years, everything since sounds the same on every beat. Plus now he just puts his name to other people's work, and even back when he was good he wasn't changing the samples as much as people think.

I think Rick Rubin did a really good job with Slayer and Johnny Cash. That sounds like an interesting combination.

I'd second Rick Rubin....did a sterling job on De-Loused in The Comatorium, IMO.

Yeah but with Rubin, it's like... give me a studio that expensive and I could do it, too If we're talking in terms of the best producers OF ALL TIME... then I guess I'd have to choose somebody like Brian Wilson, Martin Hannett, Brian Eno or Kevin Shields. Of today, it'd be one of: David Newfeld Nigel Godrich Dave Fridmann Ken Nelson Ken Johnson Phil Ek David Sitek James Murphy And Albini on a good day. (This doesn't even begin to count hip-hop / electro producers...)

I dunno anything about producers. Its all about the DIY.

I'm gonna go with Steve Albini, I love the minimalist sound, plus he's the only producer whose work I would recognise.

Yeah, ALbini is distinctive, although some of the bands he has worked with were just quite bad, but he makes himself available to smaller bands, which is good. Godrich does an amazing job. Whoever did the Velvet Underground's stuff (rough and raw). I like either perfect and pristine, or completely rough and DIY, everything inbetween is boring.

Ha ha didn't Andy Warhol 'produce' VU & Nico?!!!
I think it was all a bit DIY.
Phil Ek is good too - Built to Spill records are very well produced, and the new Malkmus record not only being great tune-wise is also well produced.

Yeah Warhol was credited, as a publicity stunt. Fuck knows who did the work.

Some names here suprised me - in a good way. I reckon Rubin, Fridman are really good - also I like some of the work an idea Leckie had esp in his sessions with The Roses, early Verve and Radiohead.
