What's your favourite? I can't stop listening to "What's Up Fat Lip"? I've never heard anyone be so honest and self-depreciating on any record, never mind hip-hop, where the tradition is to talk about how great you are all the time. Listen here fatlip.deliciousvinyl.comOther than that, gotta be "3 Feet High and Rising" by De La Soul, one of the most overwhelmingly positive, happy and fun records ever made. And one of my favourite covers!

Don't ask this question with me around! I have like, 10 years of hip hop nerdism behind me. Sooooo: Nas - Illmatic LP - the best hip hop album ever, probably. Every song is brilliantly produced and written and neither Nas or AZ can live up to their performances on here. AZ just had one verse and it's incredible. OC - Time's Up - "You lack the minerals and vitamins..." - One of the best minimalistic records ever. Anything by Big L - Hilariously over the top gangsta rap, with self deprecating touches to show he's not serious ie. "Everywhere that I go brothers know my fucking name, flooring nuhs and I only weigh a buck and change" Ghostface Killah's entire back catalogue - the black Joe Pesci. Kool G Rap - "Streets of New York", and loads of other stuff - the most complex rhyming ever, he can do a whole song where every line rhymes with 4 syllables BDP - Criminal Minded LP. I have this on tape! It's my favourite old school record, the drums my god the drums! Gangstarr - anything, the beats are incredible, DJ Premier is the best hip hop producer ever, it's almost undisputed. Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth - T.R.O.Y. - very moving, great sample. Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders LP I'll stop now, i'm hyperventilating.

Ever since the hip-hop thread on DiS I've been reluctant to talk about it... apparently my taste in hip-hop isn't "real" enough... oh well As far as albums go, "Three Feet High..." is as good a choice as any. The obligatory Wu Tang / Public Enemy picks are all class. I think Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein" is my favourite newer hip-hop record. I also like cLOUDDEAD, although whether this is "hip-hop" or not appears to be second only to abortion and euthanasia in the list of modern-day moral controversies. Also certain items by A Tribe Called Quest, Biz Markie, Sage Francis, Beasties' "Paul's Boutique"... it's all good...

it was probably me on my soapbox sorry! You like Wu Tang, Tribe, Biz and P.E., so it's not all bad I just can't get into anticon etc, hip hop is based on soul and there's just none in the 'avant-garde' stuff IMO. I tried so hard to get into Cannibal Ox, but i just can't. hip hop now sucks the big one though.

Ha, it's okay. I was probably soapboxing too Anticon are a funny creature. Very patchy but occasionally inspired. I love the first cLOUDDEAD album - it literally took me months to "get", but I think that's through necessity. You have to live inside it, to use the cliche. There are some stunningly emotional moments there... you just have to engage with their pattern of expression (which admittedly is pretty strange, but there we go).

Dose One always sounded like a priest on E to me. it's like gabbacore... go listen to Group Home's song "Tha Realness" - it's the most hip hop record ever. That beat! oh and the best Wu related record ever is Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..." - if you like Dizzee Rascal etc, see where minimalism started. On a huge soundsystem it's incredible, the basslines are disgusting.

it's just something i've noticed.
even people who detest rap music love that album, although they tend to detest everything else by De La.
Which is a shame as Buhloone Mindstate or whatever it's called is class.

I'm listening to New Kingdom-Paradise Don't Come Cheap album just now. Not sure which pigeonhole that'd come under.
