I have just watched The Straight Story again so while it is fresh in my mind.....
The reason I like this film is because it is simple, but has so much depth, and it's pace forces you to slow down and reflect. It's just really touching. Maybe it is a bit sentimental in places. I am a complete sucker anyway, and always get pulled in by emotional devices in films. But I think this film does it in a good way. It made me want to watch the stars, (but I live in London so will have to settle for low flying aircraft and police helicopters) have a family (one day) and I also realised that I miss having old people to talk to. I'll stop now.
There is still some David Lynch weirdness in there too, in the scene when Alvin comes across the woman who keeps driving into deer and I am sure when he's cooking up the deer stake afterwards the deer in the field behind him were made of wood.
Harry Dean Stanton playing Lyle Straight was really nice too.
Alvin Straight: You don't think about getting old when you're young... you shouldn't.
Cyclist #1: Must be something good about gettin' old?
Alvin Straight: Well I can't imagine anything good about being blind and lame at the same time but, still at my age I've seen about all that life has to dish out. I know to separate the wheat from the chaff, and let the small stuff fall away.
Cyclist #2: So, uh, what's the worst part about being old, Alvin?
Alvin Straight: Well, the worst part of being old is rememberin' when you was young.
