Kubrick for me. I love his creative camerawork, his long gliding shots, the whole of 2001, ... it's just noticeably brilliant direction. such a shame that spielberg fucked up (insert the name of that kid robot movie here)

Apparently Welles wanted to make a film of Heart Of Darkness, which Coppolla made as Apocalyse Now. I can't even imagine how good it'd have been. Yeah, I know. It would have been incredible. Welles as Kurtz, obviously. Maybe Joseph Cotten as Marlow? Gregg Toland behind the camera again. Bernard Herrmann score. Man, it sucks that film never got made...

Isn't there some book about it actually? I read an article on it anyway, The Greatest Film Never Made. Welles wanted it to be an allegory of what was going on in Europe at the time (fascism), which the studios didn't really like. It could have been so good.
