Right. I need a new computer. If only to allow me to hang around here more often, and post people MP3s. My old one is buggered and I'm guessing my housemates may be increasingly pissed off with me nicking theirs.
Is anyone in the know and have any fantastic advice about where to look for the best deals? I want a laptop which is as cheap as possible. I'm proper skint and my top limit is about $500.

Has to be a laptop? You could get your dream e-mac for £700. It's the best computer I've ever had / used / seen.

I've just inherited a G4 Power Mac. It's very big and I just keep looking at it thinking, Wow! I've never owned so much technology in all of my life. I'm finding it quite daunting actually.

I had a tower built to my spec the year before last. Got lots of memory, seperate dvd drive and burner. With a big monitor and photo printer it cost me £804. It would now cost about half that, maybe even less. Kept giving me gyp, no sound and printer not working for months on end. Coastal came round, looked at them, I saw a magic beam emit from her eye and they started working. She is not of this world and scares me.

Build your own - it's easier than it sounds, and you don't have to pay for labour and a load of bundled crap you'll never use. Having said that, you can get a fairly crusty computer from Dell for £500, but you get technical support and a warranty.

When Doug was buying his PC we went for a walk down City Rd -where the computer shops live. Asked in the first shop "how much will this set me back.." and specified exactly what he wanted. Got a quote. Went to next shop "This is what I want and this is what I've been quoted. Can you beat it?" He ended up paying about £300 (i think) for a kickarse one (although he got it without monitor and software).
Just don't get it in PC World -all that free software they bundle in costs you hundreds of pounds.

I planned to spend 500 but ended up getting a Dell 5000 which was £700 but it's a good pute, I had to get my mate to set it up for me to get out of the set up fee of £80 - it's nice knowing that I've got lots of security if it all goes wrong tho. My credit card however is now useless to me....

The one I had built for my mum was a tower. It had no OS but came with keyboard/mouse/speakers. Added monitor and printer. Had it built in Glasgow in independent place.
