lol - next time! Neither of us is sure how to say Chiaroscuro so we didn't bother with that, after staring him in the eye a couple of times and not getting any reaction we gave up!

Chye-Ro-Skew-Ro I believe.
It's a form of film lighting, used in German Expressionism and Film Noir.

It means the use of light and shade to create the illusion of depth, I believe.

It's a form of film lighting, used in German Expressionism and Film Noir. Actually that's only one sense of the phrase - basically it means any kind of graded shading, often in pencil drawings, etc. Still, film noir lighting rocks. Conrad Hall did a lot of that kind of stuff, genius that he was... [Edit: Wiggles said it better. Ignore me...]

Ah I love learning things!
I only knew of the film aspects, what with being a film student.

Doug was saying t'other day that he went to Hereford, and there was no Woolworths there. I can't think of anyone more perfect to ask "why not?" than you.

um , I don't know! Is it a new high street? Woolies are all based on old sites apart from the out of town ones, consequently if a town has a new and an old centre, Woolies will always be in the poorly serviced run down part of town. It's part of it's charm.

When did this thread get so popular? The little folders burning and everything! Just like my ears! What the fuck does that phrase about burning ears mean anyway?

It means the use of light and shade to create the illusion of depth, I believe. I'm not sure I like your insinuation, sir. In fact, the entirely retrospective justification I've dreamt up for that cumbersome username is more to do with the root of the word - that it seems to express the rather edifying paradox of being clear and obscure at the same time. I aim towards this end at all times.

it means someones talking about you behind your back. Lol. I know! What do you take me for!? I mean why?!! Eh? Answer me that!! Is it because they're talking literally behind your back and breathing heavily on the backs of your ears?!
