Has anybody else read these books? I've just finished the first in the trilogy, and it's fucking good. At the end, it suddenly all makes sense, and you can see that it's all a clever metaphor. Amazing. Can't wait to read the rest.

I enjoyed them, had to read the last 2 books in one sitting as they were so very compulsive. I can't really remember them now cos sleep deprevation and reading don't really combine. Will read them again when/if my mate gives them back to me.
Harry Potter is shit tho.

Bah. I have no time for Harry Potter and his ilk. Hmm, I wonder whether the Great Maw would devour him...

I read them in the call center I used to work in, the girl I was sat next to -lovely as she was- was a fan. I really don't get how they've gotten so massive actually, the writing is crap and the ideas are unoriginal.
Anyone read the Ladies Detective Agency series? I love them, there's a real warmth and wit to the writing.

I think the author's understanding of determinism is flawed (although I may be wrong, having only read the first part, and knowing nothing about him) - at the end he compares a coin toss to quantum uncertainty, which is, to my mind, a bad comparison.
Anybody else have an opinion on this?

On that? Er, nope.
I am on the third book now though, near the end. I think all the symbolism and metaphor is very light, and only touched on really, but I like the evocative locations and imaginative drive behind the plot. As in the movies thread, for me it's all about flair and imagination. These books have lots.
As for Potter, I read those when I had food poisoning. Very light indeed (kids books), but not too taxing and kept my mind off the associated gastro-horror.

i'm a sucker for books like these. i love harry potter and his dark materials even more. my favourite in the trilogy is the subtle knife, i remember waiting for months after i read northern lights for it to come out, then even longer for the amber spyglass to be released. There was something not quite fulfilling about the amber spyglass though, even though it was quite excellent. dont worry i wont give away the ending but go read the rest! go! *poke*

Heh. I was gonna say something else about poking but the goddamn savages in this town would have only made it into some kind of fierce, barbed quadruple-entendre, so I won't.

Apparently they're making a film of His Dark Materials, and they're gonna take out all the religious bits, and just refer to it vaguely as The Authority.
Sounds great doesn't it?

Hmmm. I can't help but feel totally cynical about this. I bet we end up with some useless posho stage school brat as Lyra. Like Kiera fucking Knightley or something. And de-clawing the subject matter isn't exactly a good start is it? The church vs. science thing is the central premise of the entire book isn't it??

I love this trilogy, read them about a year ago one after the other coz they are so very compulsive, I loved the subtle knife best too. I guess the series does lend itself to becoming a film, but you know it's gonna be shite, it can't possibly live up to how you create that world in your imagination. I want to read them again now...

I read all the Harry Potters one after the other too, they're okay, they steal alot from all previous Witchy type books, but they are good. They're just much more for children than adults, unlike the Pullman trilogy which I think some kids struggle with.
I was living with family at the time, I do usually read grown up books.....
