I don't think I'll be able to watch it without endlessly comparing it to the original. Gene Wilder totally made that role his own, so it's kind of difficult for anyone to fill his shoes, no matter how well they play it.

I think I'm with Booby G, there is nothing about this film that appeals to me. Don’t think there is much to tempt me to go and see it either …I have, however, found this thread very entertaining ;D

i don't think its really fair to compare it to the 'original' ( the 1970s version). the 'original' took very little from the book, and since this one is a film adaption of the book, and is pretty much exactly the same as the book, i would think that tim burton's film is the 'original'. the 1970s version twisted the story around to suit the character of, and focus attention on, willy wonka instead of charlie. it was also common knowledge that roald dahl was very disappointed with the film when it came out.
i think its a better film all round than the 1970s version. the sets are better, the story is better (because the script was actually written from the book), the acting is better, the songs are better. however, gene wilder is a much more convincing willy wonka - much creepier, more eccentric and definitely cooler.

And they didn't invent a Pappa Wonka in the 70s. Dahl was basically a Cardiff fella, the spinning of his grave + a dynamo is currently powering my house.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the '70s film scripted by Roald Dahl? I know he was disappointed with it, but the script was his own adaptation, so you can't really criticise it on that ground.
(For the record, I love the book and have read it many times...)

Doesn't this one kind of do that as well? With the whole childhood malarkey? How does the book end? I was trying to remember. Is it the same as the film? It doesn't say "candy" and "dollars" in the book
